This book is about forgiving yourself and others so you can live your life to the fullest extent that God intended. It is always best to tell the truth; but even when we don’t, God uses those times as well. Following Karen and Brian’s journeys away from each other, and then back together again, we see that by not telling the truth, both were hurt and spent years in pain. But, when they got back together and faced the truth, they find healing and forgiveness.

Brian and Karen get separated just when Karen thought they would be spending the rest of their lives together. Another woman comes into Brian’s life and he never looks back. Karen moves on and can’t believe it when Brian comes back into her life. Both must face the past, come to terms with how they hurt each other, and find a path to forge ahead. This book will touch your heart and bring tears to your eyes. The unbelievable power of God and His love will move you. The characters are so well depicted, you have to keep reading to see what happens and to make sure everything will be worked out in the end.

Where Love Once Lived is a definite must read for anyone who enjoys a great love story powered by God’s love and forgiveness. Learning how to forgive, love, and move on is hard for anyone to do. Brian and Karen have so many things to work through; but, their story is an encouragement to us. God will never leave us nor forsake us. He is there waiting for us to call on Him—and when we do—He is there. Pick this book up today and enjoy a great book. I can’t wait to read another book by Sidney Frost!

First Date by Krista McGee

First Date
By: Krista McGee

This book is amazing! Krista McGee is a Christian young adult fiction writer, but First Date is for anyone who wants to know how to let God use them in their lives. Addy Davidson is picked to be a participant in the reality TV show, The Book of Love. The winner gets to go to the prom with the President of the United State’s son, Jonathon. Addie doesn’t want to be on the show; she wants to be left alone to live her life in quiet. Unknown to her, God wants her to be on this show to step up and speak up for Him. Once she realizes this, she is nervous about speaking of her faith to others who may not believe like she does, but she relies on God to give her the words to say. If you’re nervous, shy, or feel you can’t talk to people about your faith, you must read this book!

I could picture myself in Addie’s shoes. She is a Christian, placed in unfamiliar surroundings, with people who aren’t Christians, and she feels God leading her to share her faith with them. How does she do this? How can she do this? Esther in the Bible is a similar story. She was put in a position for such a time as this. God put her there to do His work. By faith, Ester and Addie step out and talk about God’s love. We know how Ester’s story turns out. You’ll have to read First Date to see how Addie’s story turns out. You won’t be disappointed!

Krista McGee writes with wit, charm, and her love for God shines through this book. Sit back, relax, and enjoy getting to know Addie, Kara, and the other Book of Love contestants. These characters are very well developed; you think about them after the story has ended. Hopefully, there will be other stories coming out about these other characters! I would love to read more by this author. I received this book from Booksneeze in exchange for a review.

Joy Restored by Jude Urbanski book review

Joy Restored
By: Jude Urbanski

Joy Restored is a definite must read! Once I started this book, I could not put it down. Jude Urbanski draws you in and won’t let you go. Seth and Katarina become real people as you learn about them and their problems. Seth’s wife and child died and he is afraid to love again. Katarina’s husband was killed and she has lost her faith and trust in God. While reading their story, your own faith and trust in God will be challenged and tested.

What do you do when you have lost everything and don’t know where to turn? Seth learned he had to acknowledge God was in charge of his life and he had to accept what he couldn’t change. Focusing on what he had instead of what he’d lost was a big step. What do we tend to do? Do we think about what we no longer have, harbor bitterness toward God over what He has “taken away,” or turn away from God altogether? God has promised peace when we believe and trust Him. He walks the way with us. When we listen long enough, there comes a peace. Faith is God’s gift to us, and we’ve only to accept. Faith involves belief and trust. Happiness might be connected with circumstances, but joy was different. Reading this book enlightens the difference! I took to heart these passages in Joy Restored and feel closer to God than when I started this book. Joy Restored will draw you closer as well and increase your faith and trust in God and His faithfulness.

You will enjoy getting to know Seth, Katarina, her children, and Seth’s parents. Follow along on their journey to the peace God brings when they fully trust in Him. My faith, love, trust, and peace have grown just from reading this book and testing where I stand with God. Yours will be, too. This book is the first in the series. I can’t wait to read the next one! Joy Restored is for anyone who loves romances with a strong Christian background. You won’t be disappointed!

Isabell'e Inning by Donna Winters

Isabelle’s Inning
By: Donna Winters

I loved this book by Donna Winters! She hits a home run with this story. Isabelle Dorlon’s mother has a rooming house where Jack Weatherby stays. He wants to play on the Erskine College baseball team. Isabelle’s father died and she and her brother, Tracy, are keeping his broom-making business going. Isabelle’s Inning is about faith, hope, love, and trust. Once you meet the characters, you are drawn in and don’t want to stop reading until you finish the book!

In one part of the book, there is a debate whether the automobile will take off, or if the horse and carriage will always be the mode of transportation. Erskine and Robinson debaters are squaring off to see which college will win the debate. Knowing how this turns out makes this debate even better. Two quotes stick with me after reading the debate. One is, “The Medical Journal predicts: ‘If the machine ever attains the unlikely speed of eighty miles per hour, it will have to drive itself, for the human brain will be incapable of controlling it.’” And, “The horseless carriage is an impractical machine suitable only for the privileged minority interested in pleasure driving, and then only on flat roadways during warm months of the year where no horses or cows can be found.” I found the debate to be factual of what people thought about the car when it first came out. Some of the comments, like the one about no horses or cows around, were funny.

Isabelle has an issue that she doesn’t want others to know about. Jack has something he is hiding as well. Read the book to see how Isabelle’s honesty gives Jack the courage to face his fears as well. Isabelle and Jack learn about love and trust. See whether Jack gets to follow his dream of playing on the Erskine 9. The characters are well-developed and the plot draws you in. Whether you like baseball or not, Isabelle’s Inning is a keeper!

Out of Control by Mary Connealy

Out of Control
By: Mary Connealy

I loved this book by Mary Connealy. Out of Control is filled with inspiration, romance, and mystery. Once I started the book, I could not put it down. If you are looking for an awesome Christian romance with lots of suspense, then this book is for you!

This is book 1 in The Kincaid Brides series. Rafe meets Julia when she has been left for dead in a cave. She can’t get out because someone has moved her ladder. She is yelling for help when Rafe comes along and hears her. He rescues her and together they find out who is trying to kill her. Julia lives with her step-mother who is about to give birth and she has a half sister, Maggie.

Julia’s father works in town but no one knows about her, his wife, or Maggie. Out of Control builds the suspense of who is after Julia and why, who is living in the cave—is it the same person that is after Julia, and do Rafe and Julia belong together? Mary Connealy does an excellent job of describing the scenes and building the suspense to keep you turning the pages. You won’t want to put this book down until you finish the last page.

I enjoyed Julia’s fascination with the fossils she found in the cave. Her explanation of how the fish fossils got there was very interesting. She studies geology, and Rafe has no idea what that is. Do they belong together, will they get together, does Julia’ step-mother’s baby survive, does Rafe get his family back together? This book answers all those questions. Julia thinks she can never be loved and Rafe thinks he can never overcome his fear of caves. Can these two learn to trust each other and God? If you are looking for a great mystery to read full of inspiration and romance, this is it!

The Tenant by Charles G West book review

The Tenant
By: Charles G West

The Tenant by Charles G West is a great medical science fiction thriller. When I started this book, I couldn’t put it down. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is believable. Have you ever wondered if a brain transplant could be accomplished—and if so—what the consequences would be? This book is full of suspense, a switch on mistaken identity, and a pursuit for the truth.

Dr Christopher Warren and Dr John Sumner have successfully transplanted brains from one primate to another. William James is wanted for attacking a woman. The cops go after him; he hits one with a shovel, and the other cop shoots him— but doesn’t kill him. Dr Warren is passing by and goes over to help. He takes James to the hospital and James drives a screwdriver into his chest. Dr Sumner can’t save Dr Warren, but he can save James; therefore, he puts Dr Warren’s brain into James’ body. Once this procedure is considered a success, you won’t believe what happens. The only people to know what has happened are a nurse who decides to leave because she can’t handle this and Dr Sumner—who gets killed. West’s story is about Dr Warren’s plight to prove his innocence in the accused body (who he finds out is really Jesse Campbell), his quest to reunite with his wife, and his acceptance with a body that is not his own.

Once you start this book, you will not be able to put it down. This is a very believable story about a brain transplant, and a guy in somebody else’s body accused of a crime. How does he go about proving his innocence? How does he get someone to believe him? Does he get reunited with his wife in this other person’s body? You will have to read this book to experience what happens. You’ll be glad you did. Even after finishing the book, you’ll have to go back to reread parts. It’s that good!

Backyard Horses by Dandi Daley Mackall book review

I received this book, Backyard Horses by Dandi Daley Mackall, free from Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for a book review. I loved this book!! If you have ever prayed for something to happen, this is the book for you. Mackall does a great job showing the power of prayer, trusting, and believing in God for miracles in the life of almost-10 year old Ellie.

All Ellie wants is a beautiful stallion to ride in the Hamilton Royal Horse Show. She daydreams about this horse. She has prayed for years for God to send her a horse. She is doing a science project on how to get a horse. Begging and crying have already been tried and failed—all that is left is praying. Then, one day she is daydreaming out the window, and there is a pinto horse running around lost; but nobody believes she saw a horse. Ellie thinks, “It’s a horrible feeling when the only one who believes you is you.”

But God has control of this situation. Ellie is dreaming of a champion stallion; God shows her a pinto. Ellie’s brother, Ethan, is deaf. Ellie’s mother and father, and her friends help round out the story. The characters are very believable. Ethan signs to Ellie that there’s no such thing as a coincidence—only God things—which are events only God could bring together. Ellie finally realizes what she has been wanting is right in front of her. Will she realize it in time? Will she get to keep “her” horse? Ellie tells us that she guesses a lot of her prayers are selfish. But she doesn’t think God gets mad for it. She can see Jesus smiling at her when she prays. He’s just glad she can be hones with Him. That is how we need to be. Tell God what you want; the answer may still be no, but at least you’re being honest.

This story is an honest look at a 10 year old’s view of wanting something. It will touch your heart, make you laugh, make you cry—but leave you with a very good feeling at the end. I am looking forward to reading more books by Dandi Daley Mackall. Once I started it, I couldn’t put it down. Night of the Cossack by Tom Blubaugh is a must read. This is a story about a Jewish boy whose father dies, then he is kidnapped by the Cossacks, and subsequently drafted into the Russian Army. You get drawn into the story from the start.

Do you regret not knowing an ancestor who is gone now, and there is no one left to answer questions? Do you wish you knew their story? This is a historical fictional account of what might have happened to Blubaugh’s grandfather. He knew his grandfather had been a Russian Cossack soldier and had immigrated to America in 1910. Blubaugh puts those pieces together—with the historical facts of the Cossacks—and weaves a believable fictional account of his grandfather’s life.

Night of the Cossack starts with Nathan waking up to the Cossacks attacking his village. He is kidnapped by Nikolai, a Cossack soldier. He takes him in as his son and teaches him the way of the Cossack. I enjoyed learning about the Cossack way of life. The story follows the adventures, betrayals, and challenges of Nathan and how he adapts to his surroundings to survive and make it to America. You will be amazed at Nathan’s story—from changing his name a few times to escape capture to traveling the secret route set up to convey Jews to Bucharest. Nathan eventually gets a job on a ship and sails for America.

If you love adventure, historical fiction, and suspense, I highly recommend this book, Night of the Cossack.

It's Your Kid, Not a Gerbil by Dr Kevin Leman book review

It’s Your Kid, Not a Gerbil!
By: Dr Kevin Leman

I received this e-book from Tyndale publishers in exchange for a book review. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started It’s Your Kid, Not a Gerbil! by Dr Kevin Leman. I have read many books claiming to help with the parent/child relationship. I was very impressed with this book. There were many pointers and tips to take away from this book. I am anxious to apply them to my own kids and see what happens. Some ideas I had heard before; some I don’t think would work in our family. Overall, Dr Kevin Leman did a great job. I would recommend this book to anyone who has young children. Mine are older, so I felt I had missed out on some of the ideas he presented. However, his 10 Ways to Rear a Kid From the Inside Out really hit home. I can do this now.
1) Understand Your Child’s Uniqueness: No two relationships are the same, and that goes for relationships with your kids as well. Their personalities and yours result in a different relationship with each child.
2) Give Your Kids a Piece of You: Your kids want you. It’s that simple. Have a pizza night, or game night, just you and your kids. You will be amazed at what you find out when your kids feel they have your attention and your love.
3) Treat Each Child Differently: Each child is different and enjoys different things. Now, my daughter fusses because I don’t treat her like her 17 year old brother. She is 14. I think this would work more for younger children. As they get older, they recognize the differences and feel slighted.
4) Give Your Kids Rituals: This is an interaction that meets their needs and builds your homegrown bond. Things like wrestling after work, building forts, making breakfast on Saturday mornings.
5) Put Your Relationship with Your Kids First: When they know you love them for them, they’ll want to please you, not act out. Again, I think this works more for younger children. By the time they are teenagers, they are pushing the limits to see what they can get away with. You have to stand firm and show your love and trust.
6) Be Real: Let your kids know your experiences.
7) Nurture Your Child’s Trust: If they ask a question, answer it age appropriately. Take them and their questions seriously. When they get older, they’ll come to you with everything.
8) Model Values Worth Catching: You want them to be respectful, genuine, caring. They must see you acting that way, also.
9) Use Chores To Teach Character & Responsibility: If you see something on the floor that shouldn’t be there, pick it up. Don’t walk by and think that isn’t my job. Whether you’re at the store, walking through your kitchen, or at the ball game, you teach your kids to pitch in and be a help.
10) Look Out for Others: Teach them to think of others.

This book really gave me some ideas to ponder. I want to raise a kid who has character, not one who is a character. You have to know their heart, what makes them unique. In order to do this, you have to spend time with them, not relegate it out to babysitters, coaches, or camp counselors. They just want to spend time with their parents and feel loved and respected by their parents for being who they are. This book helps you lay a firm foundation for a lifetime relationship with your children. When they get older and move away, they’ll want to come back and visit! No one can take your place instilling your child’s positive self-image, view of the world, concept of faith, and sense of security. Only you can do that. Reading this book will show you how to make the most of your time with your child. You’ll be glad you took the time to read this book and form that bond with your child!

1105 Yakima St by Debbie Macomber book review

1105 Yakima St
By Debbie Macomber

I received 1105 Yakima St by Debbie Macomber from Harlequin in exchange for a review. This book is another great one by Debbie Macomber. Once you meet the characters, you can’t put the book down until all their problems are solved. This story deals with teenage daughters, loves gone wrong, a father tearing his family apart because he doesn’t like who his daughter married, and two people finding out they are in love but fighting it every step of the way.

Bruce and Rachel separate because Bruce’s daughter, Jolene, is jealous of her taking up her time with her daddy. You’ll be cheering for Bruce and Rachel to get back together, but reading how they deal with Jolene is very interesting. A teenager can be rough on a relationship! Charlotte and Ben’s house catches on fire because she is becoming forgetful. Follow them as they come to a decision about an assisted living complex. Chad Timmons and Gloria Ashton decide to break up, but she is pregnant with his child. Watch how they overcome their differences to become a family. Linc and Lorie get married without her telling her father, Leonard. He has Linc’s business, Wyse Man Garage, blackballed in retaliation. He then loses his wife, too. She moves out because of his stubbornness. This seems like a long list of characters and plots, but it is actually easy to follow from one to the next. You will get caught up in each life and wonder how things are going to turn out for each one. You won’t be able to put this book down!

Debbie Macomber deals with teenage rebellion, dementia, stubbornness, and falling in love in flowing, humorous language. She is very insightful into how these characters act and react in a realistic way. You can sympathize with Bruce’s way of dealing with his daughter—make peace and it will get better. He soon realizes that isn’t what Jolene needs at all, but it takes Rachel leaving for him to see it clearly.

Whether you’re a fan of Debbie Macomber’s, or this is the first book of hers you’ve read, you will love this book and won’t want to put it down until the last issue is resolved.

Catch Me by Lorelie Brown book review

Catch Me
By: Lorelie Brown

I received this e-book from Carina Press in exchange for a book review. Catch Me by Lorelie Brown will catch you from the get-go and not turn you loose! This is a descriptive love story between Dean the bounty hunter and Maggie the bank robber. There is romance, mystery, and figuring out what you are missing in life.

Dean becomes a bounty hunter when his wife and son are killed. He is dead inside and doesn’t realize it until he meets Maggie. She brings to life things inside of him he had forgotten about. Maggie robs a bank to pay for her father’s care. She is feisty and constantly trying to run away from Dean after he catches her to take her back for her trial. Follow Dean as he goes from not caring to realizing life is worth living and he doesn’t have time to allow anger to rule him, all because of Maggie. The ending of this story will have you reaching for a tissue. Sometimes things do work out in the end, and everyone lives happily ever after! I look forward to reading more by this author. If you enjoy a fast-paced romance, this book is for you! Fuller describes the Amish way of life, incorporating mystery, faith, and romance into her stories. Treasuring Emma will catch your attention in the first page, and you won’t want to put the book down.

Emma & Clara’s mother has died from cancer. Clara’s husband, Peter, wants Emma and her grandmother to move in with them. That’s when you see things are not like they should be between Emma and Clara. Adam has left the Amish community and turned his back on his faith and Emma. Watch how Emma finds the faith and love to forgive Adam and become whole again. Follow Adam as he realizes what he wished for isn’t all he thought it would be. He left the Amish way to join the real world. Now he is wondering what is real. Adam deals with all our own insecurities—our doubts, our questions, and our fears about God and our faith.

As you read this story, you will become intertwined in these characters’ lives. What has Mark gotten away with? He’s Peter’s cousin who shows up unannounced. What are his intentions toward Emma? Will Clara and Peter rediscover their love? Will Emma and Clara work on their problems? Will Adam and Emma figure out they love each other? Emma deserves to be treasured, just like she has treasured her mother when she was sick and now her grandmother. Will it be Mark or Adam treasuring Emma? I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The characters are very believable and the situations they encounter make for an enjoyable and interesting story. There are many different plot lines running throughout the book. Livy used to be on the streets, until she learned to trust Mrs. Brooks. Jake is the deputy; he feels everything has to be in order before he can love and live his own life. Mrs. Brooks runs the orphanage. There are also kids being kidnapped and kids loose on the streets.

Livy catches two kids stealing a watch from the deputy. She recognizes what they are doing because that is what she used to do as well. Her heart goes out to them and she tries her best to help them. Then, she runs into Jake Russell—literally. She can’t trust him and runs from the law and love. Livy has to learn to accept her salvation and increase her faith in what God has done and will do for her. Jake has to learn to love, but then he has to convince Livy to trust him—even though he is the law. If you are looking for a great romance, a good mystery, and following Livy and Jake’s walk in faith, this book is for you! You will be hooked from page one, and won’t want to put the book down. Pam Hillman has a knack for telling an awesome story. She will draw you in, and won’t let you go until it’s all wrapped up!

Superstitious by R L Stine book review

I did not know R L Stine wrote adult fiction. My kids read Goosebumps and got me hooked on his books. When I came across this book, I didn't know what to expect--I just hoped it was good! I was not disappointed. R L Stine uses the same type of language that he uses in Goosebumps to keep you interested in this book. The little off-the-wall comments and thought processes are present here--like the professor, Liam, who believes folklore. Every time something happens, he has a superstition to relate. Once you start this book, you won't want to put it down.

Superstitious is about murders happening on a college campus. Thankfully, once the scene is described, you don't revisit it. They are macabre. You follow the storyline of Sara and her budding relationship with Liam. Milton, her employer, keeps showing up. You wonder what his role is in the murders. He has a knife collection he is very proud of, and he seems a bit crazy at times. Someone calls Sara and warns her to stay away from Liam. If you like Goosebumps, you'll love this book. You won't believe who the murderer is, but you will thoroughly enjoy the ride to find out!

Lady in Waiting by Susan Meissner

Lady in Waiting
By: Susan Meissner

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for writing a review. Lady in Waiting is about a woman, Jane, who finds out her marriage is over when her husband decides to move out. The book follows her coming to terms with the divorce and her life. In conjunction with this storyline, Jane finds an old ring that is 400 years old. The name Jane is inscribed inside. Jane takes it upon herself to find out the history of the ring and its owner. Jumping between present day to 400 years ago and following that Jane is done effortlessly by this author. Take time to get to know Jane and Edward, and this Jane as she unravels the mystery.
This story is suspenseful and romantic. You can’t wait to find out if Jane and Edward get together, or if Jane and Brad get back together. Character development is essential in carrying out two story lines. Meissner does it superbly. The dialogue is easy to follow, and enhances the story. Once you start this book, you won’t want to put it down!

The Purpose of Passion by Kurt Bruner and Jim Ware

The Purpose of Passion
By: Kurt Bruner and Jim Ware

The Purpose of Passion is about “discovering what one of the world’s greatest love stories says about the meaning of romance,” according to the back cover. We follow Dante’s The Divine Comedy to see Dante’s epic vision of romantic love. From falling in love to love fulfilled, we can connect the dots between human romance and the epic love story between God and His people.
While reading this book, I felt like I was getting a breakdown of Dante’s writings. You follow Dante as he proceeds with Virgil through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. This book explains Dante’s Romantic Vision, and he hopes his vision will ignite within you as you read it, which in turn will create a greater fire of godly passion. From the first sparks of a look, to being rejected or left alone, to marrying the person who completes you, Dante shows how this is in line with what God wants, so you can then be who God wants you to be. “God hardwired you for relationship with the opposite sex as a foretaste of the ‘happily ever after’ for which you were made.”
Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy in exchange for posting a review. Lucy runs a home called Saving Grace—which houses kids who have been in the foster care system. They are turned loose at 18, and she provides a place for them to stay and learn skills to be successful in the working world. Alex is an ex football player, heir to the family fortune. She is in need of money to keep her home open; Alex is in need of her assistance to win votes for his bid for Congress. They team up, and what a team they make! She is from a poor background; he used to make fun of her in school. He grew up having it all.
I could not put this book down. All the bantering back and forth between these two was phenomenal. I couldn’t wait to see what they would argue about next, or what they would get into. They explored faith, love, and family relationships. Plot and character development move the story along. I hated to see the story end. Even after the story is over, I found myself smiling about something I had read. Case in point, when Lucy is “running away” and has on a robe and snow boots, while walking down the street and Alex is trying to get her in the car. I can still see her moving on down the street. Jenny B Jones uses lots of descriptions so you can see what she is seeing while she writes the story. I highly recommend this book, and I will be checking into others of hers!
<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=hubpag00f-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B004HB1BPQ&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

The Second Short Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner
By: Stephenie Meyer

This story is about Bree Tanner. She was introduced in Eclispse, of the Twilight series, as a newbie vampire that was killed. In this book, you get to see her side of the story. You know how it ends, if you’ve read Eclipse. Bree Tanner takes on a life of her own in the book. Her story of how she became a vampire and her relationship with Diego, bring you right into her life. I couldn’t put the book down!
If you enjoy suspense, romance, and the Twilight series, you will love this book! It has it all, even though it is a novella. It is not a long book, and doesn’t take much to read it, but I found myself rooting for Bree after the first couple of pages. The plot and character development are excellent. The dialogue kept you tuned in; you didn’t want to put the book down. You can picture what the newbie vampires are doing and what is going on around them. When Diego and Bree hide out in an underwater cave, you can visualize where they are. You can feel Bree’s fear of the sunlight. I would definitely recommend this book. This book is about G K Chesterton, who lived from 1874-1936. He was an English writer, and one of his many accomplishments was to influence C S Lewis’ conversion to Christianity. C S Lewis is the author of the Narnia series. G K Chesterton authored biographies, apologetics, poetry, novels, and literary criticisms. The object of this book is to “introduce a life and legacy that should be better known.”
This book accomplishes its purpose. I was expecting a bit more on the biography side of G K Chesterton, but what I read was excerpts from his many different works. These were introduced in each section and talked about, and then you got a piece of the work in question. For instance, the chapter on his critical studies talks about Mr. Chesterton’s Charles Dickens’s: A Critical Study. First you learn that this book is “marked by great intuitive insights into Dickens’s works.” Chesterton can be both entertaining and instructive. Then, Kevin Belmonte tells you about the review by the New York Times. The reviewer wasn’t too positive with the review, but then another reviewer, Hamilton Carr, came back with a more positive and insightful review of the work. This is how the book is set up. If you are looking for a biography on G K Chesterton, I would not recommend this book. However, if you would like to read about his many different works, and they were received, this is the book for you! I did enjoy this book, and will keep it as part of my library for future reference.

The Prophecy Answer Book

The Prophecy Answer Book

David Jeremiah

The Prophecy Answer Book is a little book about a lot of things! It answers questions regarding current events—like the place of Israel in end times and if oil holds a key to the prophetic events of the future—to the new Heaven and the new Earth and what we will do there. All this is backed by scriptures in the Bible. You can find out why David Jeremiah believes American isn’t mentioned in the Bible, and everything you need to know about the Tribulation. This is a very concise book, directly answering specific questions.
This book is very in depth in its answers regarding the questions. It has sections on Current Events, the Rapture, the Tribulation, the Antichrist, the Second Coming, the Millennium, and the New Heaven and the New Earth. One thing I learned was I had always heard the rapture would take place when every one had heard the Gospel. You hear, “The entire world will hear the Gospel before Christ returns…” and “Jesus could come at any time…” According to this book, for both of these statements to be true, the command to take the Gospel into the whole world is a condition not of the Rapture, but of the Second Coming of Christ. So, it would be correct to say Jesus could come at any time.
In the conclusion of the book, David Jeremiah asks, “As we see the signs of the End Times appearing, what shall we do?” His simple answer is, “When we know that Christ is coming again to this earth, we cannot go on being the same people.” I loved this book, and would recommend it to anyone who would like the prophecy questions answered by Biblical standards. I understood so much more after reading this book!

Angel Song by Sheila Walsh & Kathryn Cushman

Angel Song

Sheila Walsh &

Kahtryn Cushman

Angel Song will grip your heart from page one, and never let go. We get to see his first day as a Judge, the cases he is dealing with, and the people he comes in contact with. As you start the first page, you won’t be able to put the book down. From an unsolved murder, to being accused of taking bribes, to setting up Shelia’s house, you get a bird’s eye view of what Judge Greg Mathis has to deal with.
If you like mystery, suspense, and intrigue, you will love this book. Judge Greg Mathis weaves a powerful tale. The compromising videotapes coming in the mail makes you want to help solve what is going on. This is a very engaging tale from page one. Reading Judge Greg Mathis’ reasons for opening Shelia’s House makes you realize how sincere he is with helping the youth. In real life he is the founder of Young Adults Asserting Themselves. Shelia’s House gives you an inside look to some of the issues affecting the youth.
I highly recommend Street Judge to anyone who enjoys a great book. This book makes references to the time before the Judge became Judge. According to the acknowledgments in the book, it is a fictionalized version of the 1935 murder trial of Edith Maxwell, which took place in Wise County, Virginia. I was hooked on this story from page one. You follow some of the reporters traveling to Wise by way of Abingdon to cover the trial. The descriptions of Abingdon, the Martha Washington Inn, and the Barter Theater in 1935 are very interesting. They stay overnight in Abingdon, and then head on to Wise, VA. A young lady has been accused of killing her father because of a dispute over her curfew. The story unfolds of the life of the young lady and her family, and their life in Wise.
This story was very entertaining and thought provoking. You follow along and learn what is going on as the reporters learn. The dialogue is easy to follow, and you can keep up with the characters and what is going on with them. The big city reporters describe the scene as a “back of beyond” place, a phrase from the book. Another reporter decides to tell the truth about what he sees. He ends up getting fired from his job for reporting the truth. Between following the trial, learning some of the history of Abingdon and Wise, and having some characters with the Sight, this book was a delight. I would recommend it to anyone who likes trials, history, suspense, or other Sharyn McCrumb books.
I was left with one question while reading the book. When Nora Bonesteel was traveling to Wise, she encountered another woman on the train. Nora says to herself, “There wasn’t any point in telling the woman something that she wouldn’t believe anyhow. She would find out for herself soon enough.” What did the lady find out when she got to Knoxville? It is never revealed.
The side story of Henry, one of the reporters, is very touching. I cried at a couple of places. The descriptions of what he goes through, and how he got to where he was in the book, will touch your heart. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

The Spine of the Virginias by Michael Abraham

The Spine of the Virginias
By: Michael Abraham

This book is about the counties bordering Virginia and West Virginia. Michael Abraham talks to people and records their stories here. You will feel a connection to the people portrayed here, as well as learn the history relative to each area. Whether you are from this area or not, you will be drawn in by the stories of hope, faith, love, and loss.
I loved this book! Reading about how West Virginia was formed, learning Mountain Lake Hotel’s original purpose, capturing the history of coal mining, and getting Dreama Denver’s (Bob Denver’s wife) perspective on West Virginia keep you turning the pages.
Sis and Ivan Puffenbarger owned a sugar-maple business. As you read their story, you will be cheering them on, and then crying with them. You will experience Grundy’s dilemma with flooding, and see how they are coping and revitalizing. The most poignant section of the book is Michael Abraham’s insight to McDowell County, West Virginia.
I came away with two quotes from the book that really spoke to me. One is “Education is the key to achievement”. The other appeared on the last page, “Tough times don’t last. Tough people do”. Throughout this book, these quotes are expounded upon and brought to light. Some of the people included in the stories went on to college, but came back to the area they were from. All faced hardships, but read how they persevered. When you finish this book, you will still be thinking about it.

Cast of Characters by Max Lucado

Cast of Characters
Common People in the Hands of an Uncommon God
By: Max Lucado

Cast of Characters is about the people of the Bible. How did God use them? Can God use us, too? Learn about Joseph, Matthew, John, Paul, and others from the Bible. See how imperfect they were, how God used them anyway, and be encouraged! God can take little and make it much; He can take common people and change the world!

After reading this book, I felt so encouraged. Seeing how God used Matthew—the tax collector who cheated people; Moses—the murderer; and David—a man after God’s own heart, who stumbled often, for example, I am reassured. God takes the common and does extraordinary things!

Max Lucado takes these people of the Bible, and their situations, and lets you see how easy it could be one of us. For example, Moses and the burning bush is a well-known story. How about “The Voice from the Mop Bucket?” Hank is a janitor who used to be an executive, before he killed a mugger. He would rather hide than go to jail. Moses killed the Egyptian and went into hiding. Then God called him to lead the Israelites. Then there’s David facing the giant. We face giants everyday—divorce, depression, alcohol, insecurity, and many, many others. We need to face these like David did; rush your giant with a God-saturated soul. Two sentences stick with me after reading this book: Focus on giants—you stumble. Focus on God—your giants tumble. Read this book and watch your faith increase!

A Man of His Word by Kathleen Fuller

You will not want this book, A Man of His Word by Kathleen Fuller, to end. From the moment you find out she is going to be Mrs. Levi Miller, you are hooked. This story is about an Amish girl who is going to marry her dream guy. Of course, like real life, something goes wrong. Following her story throughout the book instills faith and love. By following how she deals with a husband who has abandoned her, left the Amish faith, and turned his back on their baby, you realize God has so much more in store for her. Seeing how she comes to terms with what life has dealt her will give you encouragement in the trials you face.
This romantic story challenges your faith, and helps you see God will be there for you. The plot is very well developed, as are the characters. You find yourself rooting for Gabriel and for Moriah to figure out who she really loves. You feel the struggles of Gabriel’s father. It is very interesting learning more about the Amish faith. There is even a listing of what the words mean in the front of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes romances and especially books about the Amish faith.

The Well-Behaved Child by John Rosemond

The Well-Behaved Child

John Rosemond

This book is about how to raise a well-behaved child. Part of the title says discipline that works. Does this book provide the answers? Can it help you raise a well-behaved child? I have read the book and I say it can lay the ground work to a well-behaved child. It is geared more toward the 2-12 age range, but if you have an older child, I would implement these rules first and proceed from there. In this book are many tried and true ways to have a well-behaved child. One quote I like from the book is “Children like to misbehave..misbehavior is addictive.” The child learns they get a reaction from their parents when they misbehave, but they really want to do better.

This book is about ways to cultivate a well-behaved child. “Punishment is every bit as necessary to raising a well-behaved child as weeding is to growing a successful garden.” “A garden cannot weed itself, and children cannot discipline themselves.” Parents have to take an active role in the discipline of their children. “Parental yelling is a sign that parents have lost confidence in themselves.” This book shows you how to deal effectively with your child and teach them discipline in a loving way. “Effective punishment can only be done out of love.”

I like the way this book is set up and the ways John Rosemond shows you how to have a well-behaved child. It is very straightforward and filled with loving and understanding ways to get through to your child and teach them.

The Long Way Home by Andrew Klavan

THE LONG WAY HOME

ANDREW KLAVAN

When I first picked this book up, I was excited about reading it. Charlie West is an accused murderer and supposed terrorist. This book is about him proving his innocence. From the first page, you are hooked and don’t want to put the book down. The story is told in an energizing, energetic manner. You find out how his friends help him along the way, and the different situations Charlie gets in to prove who the murderer really is.
This story is suspenseful, romantic and entertaining. The action doesn’t stop from page one. This is the second book in a series. The first book is “The Last Thing I Remember”. I recommend reading the books in order. You can then relate better to the characters in the story. The back of the book tells you all this action is going to happen. You are not disappointed. From the attack at the library to the surprise visitor at the mansion, you are kept on your toes wondering what is going to happen next. The title of the book, “The Long Way Home”, is appropriate. He has to go home to find out who he is. It is there he realizes who his friends are and who the murderer is. Sometimes you can’t do it by yourself. It is then you find out who your true friends are. The romantic side plot adds another dimension to the mix, as well as his faith in God. I highly recommend this book. This book is listed as for young adults, but I found it very engaging. I can not wait until the next book comes out in this series.

The Lightkeeper's Daughter by Colleen Coble

The Lightkeeper’s Daughter

Colleen Coble

This story is about a woman who grew up thinking she knew who she was. Addie Sullivan lives in a lighthouse with her mother and father. Her father dies and it is just her and her mother. Then a stranger comes along who tells her she is not who she thinks she is and she begins a journey to find out who she really is. Along the way, she realizes the strength of her faith and her love.
The Lightkeeper’s Daughter held me from the first page. I didn’t want to put the book down. The struggles this woman faced, like having a complete stranger tell her she wasn’t who she thought she was, really brought home the fact that each one of us must learn who we are and what we believe in. Your parents can tell you, your friends can tell you, but only as you live and learn about yourself, can you truly appreciate who you are and what you stand for. What we endure in life and how we react to it, defines what kind of person we are. As Addie discovers the life she would have had, she discovers the person she is. This book has romance, intrigue and inspiration. I was not disappointed! This book is straightforward, funny, enlightening and inspiring. Hard to believe you could get all that from a politician!! One quote from the book that defines what this book is about is: “Sometimes life throws you a curveball, but how thankful we should be that life is never boring. Sometimes surprising challenges pop up; then we see what we’re made of as we make choices about how to react to the circumstances.”
This book follows Sarah Palin’s journey from growing up in Alaska to the Presidential campaign trail with John McCain. You find out about her love of Alaska, her loyalty to America and why she is the way she is. It was very interesting to find out where she got her kids’ names from. I enjoyed learning how she trimmed the budget when she became governor of Alaska. I would love for her to become President and see what she could do to the national debt! She went against all normal guidelines for politicians and turned things around for her state. Her work and family issues helped shape her into the person she is today.
On the Presidential campaign trail, she goes into detail of what she faced and how she faced it. Most of her family traveled with her. Her oldest son, Track, was in the army at this time and wasn’t with her. Her husband, Todd, was very supportive. This book gave an in depth look at life on the campaign trail. From the many cities they traveled to, to the many different people they met along the way. It was very grueling, but she found many highlights along the way.
After finding out they lost the election, she went back to Alaska. This book also details all the ethics violations that were thrown her way when she got back home, and all the other difficulties that she had to deal with. I don’t think she wanted to resign being governor of Alaska, however, she has left it in God’s hands and looks forward to what will happen next.
Going Rogue is very open and straightforward. If you have any questions about Sarah Palin, they are answered in this book. One surprising facet of this book is her faith in God. It is inspiring to hear her talk of her faith in God and how He helped her through the things she had to deal with. She had to rely on him when she fought the oil companies and again when her son Trig was born with Down’s syndrome. This book is very inspirational and has left me with a feeling that I can accomplish anything I set out to do. A quote from the book: “Fear may fill our world, but it doesn’t have to fill our hearts.” That is the scope of this book. Fearless shows you exactly how to become fearless. It gives you 8 worry-stoppers and tells you God never sends you out alone. The best quote from the book is, “These little troubles are getting us ready for an eternal glory that will make all our troubles seem like nothing”. No matter what you are worried about or are afraid of, read this book and see how to overcome. You can live a life without fear.
Fearless is a very inspiring book. While reading it, you see where you could change to make yourself feel better about your situation. The eight worry-stoppers are a great example: pray first, easy now, act on it, compile a worry list, evaluate your worry categories, focus on today, unleash a worry army, and the best one, let God be enough. “Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need”. I recommend this book to anyone who is worried or afraid about anything. God doesn’t want us to live that way, and this book is a great help in how to overcome.

Everyday Greatness by Stephen Covey

Are you looking for a book to inspire and challenge you to go above and beyond what you are doing now? Then this book is for you!! The book, Everyday Greatness by Stephen R Covey, sets out to apply “character-driven living” principles to our own lives using adversity and challenge. The inside cover says “Everyday Greatness will help you discover inspiring, mind-expanding insight and solutions to your personal challenges.” I love this book because the stories in it are very inspiring. Each one speaks to you in a different way. Some of the stories are from famous people like Chuck Norris, Betty Ford, and Henry David Thoreau. Other stories are from people you would never hear about. The quotes that are used after each section mean just as much as the stories themselves.

The stories are very personal and each one has you feeling like you can do more than you are doing now. Every story has you thinking, “How can I be a better person, how can I help someone?” Betty Ford talks about her alcohol and drug addictions and how she overcame them. Chuck Norris talks about creating your own breaks. “If you want to accomplish anything in life, you can’t just sit back and hope it will happen. You’ve got to make it happen.” There are also stories where one person changed one life. If we can only help one person, it is worth it. The story of “The Boy Who Couldn’t Read” was very inspiring. Tyler Currie finds out a student in his classroom can’t read. The boy has been passed along each year from one grade to the next. This teacher decides to do something. He teaches the boy to read. It took one person to feel compassion and to find what would trigger the child’s learning.

This book is for anyone who wants to be nudged to do more. If you feel there is more you should be getting out of life, this book will help you find it. You cannot fully appreciate this book “Everyday Greatness” until you read it from cover to cover. Parts will make you cry, some will make you laugh, and others will make you think. But through it all, you are being motivated to do your best in all that you do. And what more could anyone ask?

Called to Worship by Vernon Whaley

Called to Worship

Vernon M Whaley

As I read this book, Called to Worship, I felt a pull to worship more and learn all I could about worship. This book describes worship from Genesis to Revelation, and beyond to Eternity. Using stories about everyday people, events, and biblical heroes, Vernon Whaley articulates what worship is, and how we can more fully worship God as He would have us worship Him. This book is not about the routine of worship, but why we worship.
A quote from the book, “God expects us to reserve time for Him so that He can refresh us as we fellowship with Him”, really touched my heart. I stay so busy all the time, and forget I need to stop and rest just as God did on the 7th day. The book showed me how to rest more productively and to get all I could from worshipping God, from understanding why to giving worship to God. The last section of the book discusses worship in Eternity. I can’t wait to experience it!! Read this book so you can too.

Buried Alive by Roy Hallums

Buried Alive

Roy Hallums

I was really anticipating getting to read this book. Buried Alive is about a man, Roy Hallums, who is held captive in Iraq for 311 days from 2004-2005.. This book is about his struggle to stay alive and make it back home. This is a true story told by Roy Hallums after he was rescued by coalition forces.
This story is very frightening and opens your eyes as to what is going on in Iraq. It is very scary what the prisoners of war deal with. You get a bird’s eye view of the horrors they face. Roy Hallums gives you the whole story by including when and how his family found out about his capture. You are also updated throughout the book as to how they felt and what they went through to have his capture revealed. At first his capture was kept secret until the family went to the news. I felt very sad and and discouraged while reading this true account. No one knew where he was. No one knew where he had gone. Reading how his rescuers brought him back home makes you wish they could go in and get all the prisoners. But some prisoners get killed before they have a chance of being rescued and some are never found. This book left me glad that he was rescued but overall sad about the whole situation in Iraq.

The Money Answer Book by Dave Ramsey

The Money Answer Book
By Dave Ramsey
This book is a handy little book of money questions and answers. I have read Dave Ramsey’s other books, The Total Money Makeover and others, but this book takes specific questions and gives exact answers. The book is divided into sections, so you know where to go look for your question. Along the way, you just might learn something about a different topic.

I really like this book. I like the fact that I don’t have to read a whole chapter to find an answer. It is right on the page. Ramsey does have advice interwoven throughout the book also. He states, “Fun can be bought with money, but happiness cannot.” You need to have savings to catch the items you know you are going to have to pay for, such as another car, college, retirement, or you will always be broke. Questions dealing with credit cards, bankruptcy, insurance, and mortgages are answered in this book. I feel like this book would be best to go along with Dave Ramsey’s other books, but as long as you know his general ideas, it is a great book to have. He goes into some detail about the emergency fund, debt snowball, and investing, but I feel his other books explain more about the processes.

A Summer Secret by Kathleen Fuller

A Summer Secret
By: Kathleen Fuller

This is another great story by Kathleen Fuller. A Summer Secret is about an Amish girl, Mary Beth, who finds a Yankee boy, Sawyer, in an abandoned barn—which is where she escapes to when she needs time alone. Mary Beth, and her brother Johnny, discover Sawyer hiding out in the barn. They decide to keep him a secret from their parents. This is the story of how faith and trust come into play in ordinary lives. Read about Mary Beth’s journey from a young girl—wanting to slip away for some alone time, to a young adult—realizing what family, love, and trust is all about.
I really liked this book; once I started it, I couldn’t put it down. Kathleen Fuller has done her research on Amish families and ways of life. Whatever is going on in the story, she explains it so the reader can see what is happening. This is the book for a great Christian Amish romance. Finding out what caused Sawyer to be in the barn to begin with—and what happens to him in the end—keeps you intrigued throughout the book.

A Century Turns by William J Bennett

“A Century Turns” is a book about the historical events over the last 20 years. This book, by William J Bennett, talks about the changes in politics, economics, war, and other facets that transformed America. If you enjoy a good history book, this book is for you. Everything is discussed—from the 1988 election to the 2008 Presidential Race.

I was hooked on this book from the very beginning. Bennett’s writing style makes for an easy read, but his subjects keep you interested. He is very knowledgeable about the multifaceted events of what is going on. Reading about the true events that have occurred in the last 20 years brought back many emotions. The terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the OJ Simpson car chase are just a few events discussed. If you want to read more about Bill Clinton, George W Bush Sr. and Jr., and President Barack Obama this is the book to read!

I'm Not Mad I Just Hate You Book Review

Book Review for I’m Not Mad, I Just Don’t Love You
Written by: Roni Cohen-Sandler and Michelle Silver

How many of you feel totally lost when it comes to dealing with your teenage daughter? How about if she isn’t even a teenager yet? That makes it even more frustrating, doesn’t it? You would expect the rolled eyes, the fight over independence, and the “you don’t know anything” attitude when they are over 13. But it seems they are starting younger.

I was at my wits end when I found this book. I opened it and I remember thinking, “I sure hope I am not wasting my time yet again!”. I had read other books claiming they could help me change my daughter, or tell me I should change. The books that I read either didn’t pertain to us, or the recommendations didn’t work. Explaining to my child that she should act a certain way, or she shouldn’t take that tone with me, or she should respect me and do what I say, did nothing to help the situation. I just felt more frustrated because I couldn’t even follow the directions in a book. Maybe my daughter was right. Maybe I wasn’t as smart as I thought I was.

My daughter would just sit there and, on a good day, stare me down. Any other day she wouldn’t look at me much less acknowledge that I had spoken to her. I would ask her to put her shoes away. She would ignore me. I would ask her to pick up her socks. She would roll her eyes. I would ask her to take her dishes to the sink. She would say in a minute. Many times I had to wonder when exactly a minute became 6 hours. You would think someone would have mentioned that. The more I would remind her to pick her things up and put them away, the more the situation would escalate. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt this way.

When I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down. Time and time again their examples would mimic what we had been through. But you know what? Instead of concentrating on what I should or shouldn’t be doing as a parent, or how she should or shouldn’t be acting, this book let me know it was perfectly normal for my child to act this way. This quote from the book: “To emphasize her independence and leave no doubt about her self-sufficiency, your own daughter may sometimes villainize you. It'snot out of spite, but more to push you away and allow her to feel as if she were on her own. Ironically, just as she is demonstrating how grown-up she is, your daughter most resembles a two-year-old throwing a temper tantrum.” Does this describe your child? Sometimes I felt so alienated from my daughter. How about this quote: “Just as your daughter is criticizing you for any and all faults, what she craves for herself is plenty of reassurance and unlimited support.” This book shows you that your child is just figuring out who she is and since she is so comfortable at home and with you, she can “try on” different attitudes until she finds the one that fits her. “Deep down your daughter knows that your love, unlike that of her peers, is unconditional and everlasting. She realizes she can test the boundaries of expressing herself without diminishing the love you feelfor her. You will not expel her from the family, cajole others to gang up on her, or worst of all, abandon her. By taking her feelings out on you, therefore, your daughter has the chance to express herself without becoming a pariah.” This quote helped me the most. I finally realized even though she was acting like she didn’t love me, she really did. She loves me a lot more than she even realizes at this point.

So now don’t you feel so much better? You are not alone in what you are dealing with and your child is normal. Still aggravating to no end on some days, but very normal!! I truly recommend this book to you. Now you can have a conversation with your daughter and not feel like you have to solve all her problems. You can sympathize with her but realize she doesn’t want to hear that everyone feels that way, or how you dealt with it when you went through the very same thing. I do hear, however, that in just a little while she will want to know, but not right now. “When you discard the notion that you are the cause of your daughter's difficulties, you may be relieved of the burden of fixing them. You can then become more objective and free to offer your daughter much needed sympathy, support and encouragement.” Until she does want to hear, hang in there, be the parent she needs you to be, to make her the person she needs to become on her own. And you know what? Along the way you will realize what a special person your daughter is.

Nell's Cowboy Book Review

Debbie Macomber- her name says it all. This book, Nell’s Cowboy, has it all. The town is called Promise. The two main characters have a past they would rather forget. There is a ghost town, an unsolved mystery, a forgotten chest in the attic and true love.
This is the 2nd book in a series. I would advise reading the books in order so you know what is going on. The first is Dr Texas and the 3rd book is Lone Star Baby. When you read the books in order you know who the characters are and can keep up with what is going on with them.
Is it better to get to know someone without knowing what they do for a living? Have you been afraid but don’t know why? Do you believe something but can’t remember what happened? That is what this story is about. Bitter end was a town that was in existence before Promise. The only problem is, no one knows why the town came to an end. Writer Travis Gant is going to find out. Nell Bishop is opening a dude ranch and Travis is her first customer. He is staying at Nell’s place to research the town. He is from the city and her family has been in Promise since the beginning. Come visit Promise and see how they confront their past, solve a mystery and best of all, see who they fall in love with!
